Dark green in colour; up to 500 mm in length. C. fragile subsp. fragile is not native to Britain and is believed to have been introduced from Japan. It is now widely distributed in Europe and the Mediterranean and has been recorded from the Channel Islands, the Scilly Isles, Ireland, the south coast of England and the west coast of Scotland as far north as Argyll. It is found throughout the year on rocks and in rock pools on the middle and lower shore, into the sublittoral. It often carries epiphytic brown and red seaweeds.

Up to 120 mm in length. C. officinalis is widely distributed and often abundant in north-west Europe. It is one of the characteristic seaweeds of rock pools on the middle and lower shore and provides a habitat for a wide range of invertebrates including Spirorbis corallinae (p. 179), Janua pagenstecheri (p. 179) and small Mytilus edulis (p. 254). It is dioecious. On south and west coasts of Britain and Ireland, Corallina elongata J. Ellis & Solander may be locally common in rock pools and gullies on the lower shore.
